The 1978 FIFA World Cup Argentina was the eleventh edition of the Football World Cup and took place in Argentina, between June 1 and June 25, 1978.
The Mexico national team was one of the 16 teams participating in the 1978 Soccer World Cup tournament that took place from June 1 to 25 in Argentina.

It was the eighth participation of Mexico, which was part of Group 2, along with West Germany, Poland and Tunisia.
The Mexican team has participated in seventeen editions of the World Cup, obtaining its best results in 1970 and 1986, where it reached the quarterfinals and finished in sixth place in both tournaments.
The team is identified with the green, white and red colors of the national flag, from which the name “la Tricolor” originates.

The visiting shirt was white, with red and green stripes on the chest, and was designed by the then coach of the Mexican National Team, José Antonio Roca.
