France qualified in third position in this World Cup after falling in the semifinals against Brazil with a rookie Pelé.

Les Bleus defeated Paraguay 7-3, Scotland 2-1 and in the quarterfinals they beat Northern Ireland 4-0, until the semifinal held in Stockholm on June 24 against Brazil, which qualified in the final with a 5 -2 leaving out the French team, in this match also the French player Raymond Kopa suffered an injury that did not allow him to continue playing the rest of the tournament. Kopa was replaced by Just Fontaine, who would go on to be the championship scorer with 13 goals.
